NEC Announces Completion of Smart Government Trials in Singapore

NEC has announced the completion of three trials of its biometric and IoT technologies in collaboration with the Singaporean government.

The trials were conducted on Jurong Island as part of the Safety and Security Industry Programme 2020, an initiative led by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Singapore Economic Development Board, with help from JTC, a state-owned real estate company.

The first trial began in September of 2016, and revolved around NEC’s NeoFace facial recognition software and its Intelligent Complex Event Processing engine, leveraging the solutions together to assess audio and video inputs to detect suspicious activity, both in outdoor and indoor environments. The second trial saw NEC’s Bus Sensors Monitoring Management System to prevent unauthorized access to vehicle doors, while the third trial used both facial and fingerprint recognition to register new visitors to the island, concluding a year after the first trial began.

The trials demonstrate NEC’s interest in enhancing its government business as a growing number of authorities around the world seek out biometric and smart city solutions. In its statement announcing the trials, NEC said it “hopes to further collaborate with the government to address heightened security threats in the areas of critical infrastructure, border control and city surveillance”.
