Mitek Publishes Guide to Liveness Detection Amid Deepfake Influx

Amid the growing threat of AI-generated deepfakes, Mitek has published a guide to liveness detection technology for enterprise leaders.

The threat is a serious one, arriving after the pandemic helped to accelerate adoption of remote identity verification and authentication tools based on facial recognition and selfie images and videos. Consumers are increasingly in the habit of verifying themselves with a selfie, and various organizations — and perhaps most notably banks and other financial services providers — have benefitted greatly from the efficiency of such processes.

But artificial intelligence has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent months, and has reached a state of the art at which it’s possible to for AI system to generate convincing images of public figures like the Pope, and even to animate elaborate dance moves based on a 2D image. This means that organization’s relying on biometric identity verification are in serious need of liveness detection tools that can reliably determine whether an end user is actually present during an authentication session, and detect any signs of artifice in an image presented for biometric matching.

Mitek’s new guide delves into the basic nuts and bolts of liveness detection technology. This includes a breakdown of the difference between ‘active liveness’ and ‘passive liveness’; an explanation of how presentation attacks can play out across face biometrics, voice biometrics, and physical documents; and even a look at the emergence of more experimental technological solutions such as emotion detection.

For its part, Mitek has accrued considerable expertise in this area. In 2021, the company acquired biometric authentication specialist ID R&D, which has continued to pursue technological innovation as a Mitek company: Just over a month ago, for example, ID R&D announced that it had won a patent for a liveness detection technique that trains neural networks to asses only the most meaningful parts of a face during a scan, helping to make liveness detection both faster and more accurate.

Mitek has also launched MiPass, a mobile app that combines both face and voice recognition, enabling biometric authentication with a strong focus on liveness detection.
