Latest Update Brings Mask Detection to TECH5’s Biometric Platform

TECH5 has updated its flagship facial recognition algorithm to support mask detection and mask recognition utilities. To that end, the latest version of T5-Face is able to determine when someone is or is not wearing a mask, allowing venue operators to factor mask compliance into their access management decisions.

In those instances, T5-Face will send a notification to a central system if someone is not wearing a mask. The platform can be integrated into an existing access control and time and attendance tracking system, and is compatible with any mobile device with a built-in camera.

T5-Face is able to positively identify people in non-cooperative settings, both in suboptimal lighting conditions and when the person’s face is obscured with a mask, sunglasses, or some other article of clothing. However, TECH5 acknowledged that identification takes less time when no masks are involved. As a result, the system may ask users to pull down their masks to speed things up in a cooperative scenario, where they are looking directly into a camera or verifying their identity on a mobile device.

Customers can integrate the new features using the T5-Face SDK. The engine is already in the field thanks to the early support of hardware manufacturing partners like India’s WYSE Biometric Systems and South Korea’s AndOpen, which have both deployed the technology in their latest devices.

“Due to the increasing demand for touchless biometric solutions during the pandemic, we are cooperating with our partners to provide reliable biometric-based systems tailored for the access control market,” said TECH5 Co-founder and CTO Rahul Parthe. “Our latest algorithm allows for facial recognition on mobile devices in a fast and accurate manner to make sure that access is granted only to those individuals who are entitled to.”

The WYSE partnership speaks to TECH5’s ongoing interest in the Indian market. The company is collaborating with ID R&D to create a Know Your Customer solution that will make it easier for people to gain access to government services on mobile devices, and recently outfitted Innovatiview with T5-Face to prevent cheating during exams.
