Innovatrics Completes NIST Testing With Third Biometric Modality

Innovatrics is boasting about the breadth of its biometric portfolio. The company has pointed out that it is one of only a select handful of vendors that offer three different modalities with algorithms that have been through NIST testing.

The company officially passed that milestone earlier this year, when its contactless iris recognition algorithm completed the NIST’s IREX evaluation. Innovatrics is one of only 15 companies that have submitted an algorithm for the IREX test, joining a club that is far more exclusive than that of facial recognition vendors. In that regard, the NIST received more than 200 entries in its most recent Facial Recognition Vendor Test.

Innovatrics, of course, is amongst those vendors, too. The company’s facial recognition algorithm is one of the most accurate solutions from a European provider, and also posted a top-three overall score in the Department of Homeland Security’s Biometric Technology Rally in 2021.

Finally, a fingerprint recognition algorithm is the third modality in Innovatrics’ comprehensive biometric portfolio. That algorithm was listed as the most accurate solution in the world in the NIST’s most recent MINEX III evaluation, besting competition from more than 40 other vendors.

Innovatrics noted that iris recognition’s accuracy level makes it a particularly popular modality for border control, and for other applications that require a high degree of security. Contactless iris scanning still requires specialized hardware, but Innovatrics believes that the market for iris recognition tech will expand dramatically as the technology becomes more affordable.

“Training a reliable, accurate and fast algorithm for iris was the focus of our efforts in 2021,” said Innovatrics R&D Head Marian Beszedes. “We’ve used everything we have learned in facial recognition and applied it to irises.”

Innovatrics has packaged its iris recognition technology with its face and fingerprint tech in its new ABIS enrollment app. The app enables mobile biometric registration, and is geared toward law enforcement agencies and elections offices.
