Innovatrics Biometric Ventures Invests in Mettis AI to Advance Driver Monitoring

Innovatrics has made an investment through its Biometric Ventures fund in Mettis AI, a Madrid-based startup that uses artificial intelligence to analyze driver behavior and enhance road safety. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The investment pairs Mettis AI’s behavioral analytics platform with Innovatrics’ facial recognition technology to create a combined system for driver identity verification and continuous behavior monitoring. The integrated solution is aimed at driving schools, fleet operators, mobility and carpooling platforms, ride-hailing services, and logistics companies that need to link individual driver performance data to verified identities.

“In logistics, where drivers rotate across a single fleet vehicle, it is essential to track performance at the individual level rather than per vehicle,” Vojta Diatka, CEO of Biometric Ventures, said in a statement.

The system is designed to confirm a driver’s identity through facial recognition before each trip begins, then continuously monitor behavior behind the wheel using Mettis AI’s computer vision algorithms. It flags risky actions such as distracted driving, drowsiness, and mobile phone usage, linking each safety event to a verified driver profile rather than to a vehicle identifier alone.

For fleet operators, the approach addresses a persistent gap in conventional telematics systems, which typically tie safety data to the vehicle rather than the person operating it. By binding behavioral events to biometrically verified identities, the combined platform enables per-driver risk scoring, performance benchmarking across shifts, and targeted safety interventions tailored to individual driving patterns.

Biometric Ventures, the corporate venture arm of Slovakia-based Innovatrics, focuses on early-stage companies applying biometric and identity technologies to verticals beyond traditional security and onboarding. The fund has previously supported ventures in identity inclusion and civil registration. The Mettis AI deal was notably the first Biometric Ventures investment closed entirely without an in-person meeting between the parties.

The driver monitoring sector has attracted growing attention as in-cabin camera systems expand beyond private vehicles into commercial fleet management. Regulators in the European Union and other jurisdictions have moved toward mandatory driver monitoring requirements for professional transport operators, creating new commercial demand for solutions that combine identity verification with real-time behavioral analysis at the individual driver level.
