Erste Group, one of Central Europe’s largest banking groups, has built a digital onboarding system capable of running across multiple countries simultaneously while adapting to local regulatory and compliance requirements in each market, as detailed in a newly published case study from identity technology provider Innovatrics.
Erste operates the George digital banking platform across several Central and Eastern European countries, with roughly 11 million users. The group wanted to add a remote account-opening channel to George without forcing each market to build its own verification flow from scratch. The challenge was that compliance requirements, acceptable document types, liveness standards, and channel configurations vary by country, meaning a one-size-fits-all integration would either fail local rules or require a separate implementation per market.
The solution Innovatrics supplied is modular: a single core integration that each country can configure independently. Markets can enable or disable components – OCR document capture, NFC-based chip reading, passive or active liveness, video injection detection, and face matching – without touching the underlying architecture. The same toolkit also supports dedicated flows for minor onboarding, where guardian consent and local rules require a different path, and for branch-assisted onboarding, where staff scan an ID document and OCR prefills customer data to reduce wait times.
The results Erste reports are significant in scale. The system currently supports approximately 260,000 new account openings per year across five countries. Beyond raw volume, Erste says the rollout has improved customer experience and driven measurable growth in online product sales including savings accounts, loans, and insurance. These are outcomes that reflect what happens when a bank can offer a low-friction remote onboarding path instead of requiring a branch visit.
The case study also touches on fraud defense. By combining liveness detection with video injection detection – a control specifically designed to catch synthetic or pre-recorded video streams being fed into the verification flow – the system addresses a class of attacks that has grown in relevance as presentation attack tooling has become more accessible. Innovatrics has been active in this area: the company recently claimed top rank-1 accuracy in the latest NIST ELFT latent fingerprint benchmark and has been expanding its deployment footprint across fintech and broader onboarding use cases, including a recent partnership with Payout to automate fintech identity checks.
The Erste deployment is a useful reference point for how large financial institutions are approaching multi-market digital identity rollouts. Rather than building bespoke systems for each jurisdiction or accepting the lowest-common-denominator configuration that works everywhere, Erste and Innovatrics built a shared infrastructure layer with country-level configuration on top. That model — one integration, many compliance profiles — is increasingly the practical answer for groups operating across fragmented regulatory environments.
