Innovatrics Adds Pedestrian and Joint Detection to Biometric Surveillance Platform

Innovatrics has upgraded its SmartFace facial recognition platform to support more surveillance applications. The new features include pedestrian detection and body part detection, both of which can help improve safety outcomes in public and private settings.

In that regard, the pedestrian tracker can monitor (and count) a crowd of up to 1,000 individuals, even at a resolution of only 20 pixels. The solution can help venues enforce capacity limits during the pandemic, or provide a warning if too many people are congregating in a public space. SmartFace can perform both functions without scanning anyone’s face, giving organizations a way to maintain public health while preserving the privacy of their guests.

The body part detection feature, on the other hand, gives SmartFace the ability to identify specific events, based on the postures of the people in the scene. Most notably, the system can be configured to watch for behaviors (such as raised hands) that indicate that a crime is taking place, giving venue operators the ability to respond in a timely fashion. SmartFace can track 18 different joints, and can determine whether that joint is on the right or left side of the body.

Innovatrics has also released a new feedback display app to further increase the utility of SmartFace as an access control solution. The app can be installed on a tablet or smartphone placed at a point of entry, and will let visitors know whether or not they are allowed to proceed based on the results of a facial recognition scan. For example, the system could let someone know that they cannot enter the building until they put on their mask.

The SmartFace facial recognition algorithm recently posted a top-three score in the Department of Homeland Security’s latest Biometric Technology Rally. Innovatrics added mask detection to the platform in September of 2020.
