IDEMIA, SVI Team Up On FMCW LiDAR-based ‘Tactical-level’ Biometrics

IDEMIA National Security Solutions and StereoVision Imaging (SVI) are teaming up on biometric tech. The companies have announced a strategic partnership that will combine IDEMIA NSS’s biometric software with SVI’s 4D FMCW LiDAR technology.

With respect to the latter, FMCW or “frequency-modulated continuous wave” LiDAR technology offers superior capabilities in determining an object’s length, width, depth, and velocity, in comparison to standard LiDAR technology. What’s more, SVI says its own particular laser-based technology – which is backed by over 100 patents and patents pending – can detect velocity and motion at 40 times the distance required for traditional approaches.

That offers clear applications in terms of biometrics, with FMCW LiDAR able to construct detailed three-dimensional models of a given subject. Paired with IDEMIA’s biometric algorithms, this should enable highly accurate matching and identification.

The companies’ joint solution will offer both enterprise and “tactical-level” applications, according to a statement announcing the partnership.

“We believe the integration of our identity software with SVI’s state-of-the-art LiDAR creates an unmatched solution for addressing the most challenging of security entry applications,” explained IDEMIA NSS Operations VP Shane Power. “SVI’s military funded and field proven technology provides the level of power and sophistication our customers need and demand.”

The partnership’s announcement comes shortly after the news that IDEMIA NSS had won an identity verification services contract from the United States Postal Service and the Postal Inspection Service. For SVI, it offers an “entry into new markets beyond the military and tremendous opportunities for growth over the coming year,” commented SVI President Gregory Steinthal.
