Bosch Building Technologies is partnering with IDEMIA to provide biometric access control solutions for its customers. Bosch is best known for its Building Integration System (BIS), which consolidates a number of different security functions under a single software umbrella.
Older versions of the BIS supported everything from fire alarms and video surveillance all the way through to the public address system. The partnership with IDEMIA will add biometric access control terminals to the mix. The BIS is now specifically compatible with IDEMIA’s MorphoWave fingerprint scanner, and with its VisionPass facial recognition terminal.
As a result, IDEMIA will be able to seamlessly install both solutions at any offices, factories, and commercial buildings that run on the broader BIS platform. The MorphoWave is a contactless scanner that matches four fingerprints when someone passes their hand through their device, while VisionPass comes with built-in 2D, 3D, and infrared cameras that can match as many as 30 faces in a minute.
Together, the two companies are hoping to capture a portion of a biometric access control market that will be worth $1.4 billion by 2024. They argue that biometric access control is more effective and more reliable than traditional security methodologies like ID cards, which can be copied or stolen and therefore do not offer the same identity guarantees as an immutable biometric that cannot be shared with another person. The contactless devices can also identify people with masks and are more sanitary in a post-COVID-19 environment.
“We are delighted to start this global partnership with Bosch,” said IDEMIA Biometric Devices and Automotive EVP Yves Portalier. “The combination of our biometric devices with the BIS platform will be a strong offering for companies looking for a high level of security and user convenience.”
VisionPass was named as the top biometric solution at the SIA New Product Showcase Awards in July of 2020, while IDEMIA has installed the MorphoWave at its own offices in Tokyo. Telefónica also started marketing the MorphoWave to its own customers earlier this year.
