The investment will support IDnow’s expansion across Europe and into new global markets. Corsair Capital partners emphasized their commitment to fueling IDnow’s next phase of innovation and growth, reinforcing its position as a key player in digital identity verification.
UK Plans Digital ID System to Cut £1.7B in Business Compliance Costs
The UK’s Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT) has announced plans to develop a Digital Company ID system to reduce fraud and compliance costs for businesses. The initiative, involving 70 stakeholders from the financial sector, aims to create a unified digital identity framework for secure data sharing and streamlined verification. CFIT estimates the system could save financial institutions £1.7 billion annually in compliance costs while addressing the £6.8 billion lost to fraud each year. The system is expected to cut Know Your Business compliance costs by 50 percent and accelerate business onboarding by 60 percent.
NEC Debuts Privacy-Focused Facial Recognition That Stores No Actual Images
NEC has introduced a biometric “fluctuation” estimation technology that enhances privacy protection while maintaining high accuracy in facial recognition systems. The system generates and authenticates cryptographic keys using biometric data without storing facial images, reducing privacy risks. A “fluctuation estimation” process ensures consistent key generation even when facial features change between scans. The authentication occurs in an encrypted state using a “secret computing method,” preventing key leakage during processing. The technology is compatible with standard digital signature methods such as ECDSA and EdDSA. NEC plans to deploy the technology in payment systems and entry/exit control applications, further advancing its biometric security portfolio.
DHS Launches RIVR Program to Test Remote Identity Verification Systems
The Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate has launched the Remote Identity Validation Rally (RIVR) to advance remote identity verification technologies. Running through 2025, the program will assess authentication methods for identity documents, liveness detection, and smartphone-based identity validation. Conducted in collaboration with TSA, Homeland Security Investigations Forensic Laboratory, and NIST, RIVR builds on findings from the 2024 Remote Identity Validation Technology Demonstration, which revealed significant performance variations among existing solutions. Applications for technology developers are open until April 11, 2025, with an informational webinar scheduled for March 12.
Colorado Weighs Extension of School Facial Recognition Ban Amid Privacy Debate

Nigeria Launches Biometric Student ID Cards to Enable Education Loans

VFS Global to Handle Australian Visa Biometrics for South African Travelers
VFS Global will take over biometric data collection for South African travelers applying for Australian visas starting March 10, 2025, replacing TLSContact. The transition centralizes visa biometric services, requiring South African applicants to provide fingerprints and photographs through VFS Global’s processing centers. Appointment bookings began on February 24, 2025, through the company’s website. VFS Global will handle the secure collection and transmission of biometric data to Australian immigration authorities, streamlining the visa application process with centralized services and multilingual support.
Pentagon Cancels $96M Biometric Ring Contract Amid Privacy Concerns
The U.S. Department of Defense has canceled a $96 million contract with Oura Health for 200,000 wearable biometric rings, citing “programmatic changes.” The smart rings were designed to track physiological metrics such as heart rate, body temperature, and sleep patterns to detect early signs of illness. Privacy advocates and lawmakers had raised concerns about the potential misuse of sensitive health data collected by the devices. The cancellation follows months of scrutiny, with the American Civil Liberties Union praising the decision as a step toward stronger privacy protections. Oura Health, recently valued at $5 billion, had been expanding its enterprise health monitoring capabilities. The DOD has stated it will reassess its approach to health monitoring technologies, prioritizing solutions that balance operational needs with privacy safeguards.
