Maldives Launches Nationwide Biometric System for Foreign Workers

The Maldives government has launched a comprehensive biometric data collection program for foreign workers, marking a significant expansion of its digital identity management capabilities. The initiative, dubbed ‘Kuran’gi’, requires all expatriate workers in the country to submit their biometric information as part of a broader effort to enhance identification and tracking systems.

Operating from Rehendhi School hall in Hulhumalé Phase 1, the program’s data collection centers are currently running from 9:30 pm to 12:30 am, with adjusted hours during the Ramadan period. The government has also expanded collection points to additional schools in Male’ and Hulhumalé to accommodate the large expatriate population.

The new system implements a structured approach requiring online pre-registration before biometric data submission. Family members, including spouses and minor children, must apply together, indicating a comprehensive approach to foreign resident documentation.

The news aligns with growing international trends in biometric identification systems. In 2019, INTERPOL called for increased biometric data sharing among nations, highlighting the growing importance of such systems in international security and immigration management.

The Maldives’ implementation of biometric tracking for expatriates reflects a broader global shift toward digital identity verification systems. Similar to solutions showcased at the European Police Congress, these technologies are increasingly being adopted by governments worldwide for border control and resident tracking purposes.

While the Maldivian authorities have not released detailed information about the system’s technical specifications, the program is expected to enhance the government’s ability to monitor foreign worker populations and ensure compliance with visa regulations.
