Corsair Capital Gets Majority Stake in IDnow via $295M Digital Identity Verification Deal

Corsair Capital has announced a significant strategic investment in IDnow, acquiring a majority stake in the Munich-based digital identity verification provider for $295 million (€273 million). The all-cash transaction represents one of the largest German fintech exits in recent years and marks a deepening of the relationship between the two companies.Silhouetted business professionals shaking hands in an office setting with large windows, depicting a business agreement or partnership.

The deal builds upon Corsair’s initial $40 million minority investment in IDnow from 2019, during which time the identity verification platform has substantially expanded its technological capabilities and market presence across Europe. IDnow has particularly strengthened its position through strategic acquisitions, including French market leader ARIADNEXT and German provider Trust Management AG.

IDnow’s growth trajectory has been marked by significant technological advancement, including its recent participation in the €8 million EU ACHILLES project focused on developing ethical AI for identity verification. The company has also expanded its service offerings, notably through its certification as a Qualified Trust Service Provider for e-signatures in the EU.

“Since our founding a decade ago, IDnow has become a market leader in identity verification in Germany and France,” said Andreas Bodczek, CEO of IDnow. “Corsair’s increased investment underscores their confidence in our vision and speaks to the synergies we have achieved through our collaborative relationship.”

Felix Haas, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of IDnow, emphasized the significance of the deal for the company’s future growth: “Building IDnow has been an incredible journey over the past 10 years together with Armin Berghaus, Dennis von Ferenczy and Sebastian Baerhold, and we believe today’s announcement enables us to strengthen our capabilities and capitalize on the vast market opportunity available to us.”

The investment comes at a time of rapid growth in the digital identity verification sector, with IDnow having demonstrated particular strength in regulated industries. The company expanded its presence in the cryptocurrency sector last year, joining a consortium focused on EU Anti-Money-Laundering compliance through innovative identity verification technologies.

Corsair Capital partners Raja Hadji-Touma and Edward Wertheim expressed enthusiasm about deepening their partnership with IDnow, stating they “look forward to supporting their next chapter of innovation and growth.” The investment is expected to fuel IDnow’s continued expansion both within Europe and into new global markets.
