ID Tech Digest – August 6, 2026

August 6, 2026

Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Digi Yatra Adds Driving Licences as Verified Airport Identity Credentials

The Digi Yatra Foundation has expanded its airport identity platform to support Indian driving licenses as verified credentials retrieved via DigiLocker with passenger consent. Available across 39 participating domestic airports, the feature allows over 236 million license holders to use their driving license as a primary identity document alongside Aadhaar for contactless airport entry and boarding. Stored in encrypted form locally on the passenger’s smartphone, the decentralized credential framework supports self-sovereign identity principles while processing millions of travelers through verifiable digital travel credentials and airport facial recognition.

NSW Bill Would Add Driver Licence Photos to National Facial Matching System

The New South Wales government has introduced the Crimes Legislation Amendment Bill to connect state driver license records to Australia’s National Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution. Under the proposed law enforcement framework, authorized agencies can submit identity images to receive automated verification responses to prevent stolen credentials from opening fraudulent bank accounts. The legislation also contains provisions granting police restricted access to unredacted toll-road camera footage on Sydney transport corridors to assist in identifying suspects and matching driver license photos across national identity databases.

BIO key and Maktabi Tech Bring Passwordless IAM to Saudi Education

BIO-key International has partnered with regional cybersecurity provider Maktabi Tech to deliver passwordless identity and access management solutions to educational institutions across Saudi Arabia. The channel agreement integrates BIO-key’s PortalGuard platform—combining single sign-on, adaptive multi-factor authentication, and identity-bound biometrics—into Saudi schools and universities moving administrative and learning systems online. Supported by local cybersecurity specialists, the joint offering aims to eliminate reusable passwords and deploy passwordless biometric authentication across Saudi educational institutions.

GoTyme Bank Connects Account Opening to Philippine National ID Authentication

GoTyme Bank has integrated its mobile onboarding flow directly with the Philippine National ID Authentication Services, enabling customers to open bank accounts without uploading or photographing physical identity cards. Applicants can verify their account details in five minutes by scanning National ID QR codes, entering card numbers, or matching live selfies against official Philippine Statistics Authority records. By removing manual document capture screens, the bank simplified registration and connected mobile banking onboarding directly to national identity authentication.

Researchers Find Passkey Validation Can Bypass Apples Private Relay

Security researchers at Mysk discovered that WebAuthn passkey validation requests can bypass Apple’s iCloud Private Relay proxy service, exposing a device’s true IP address to destination servers. The privacy issue occurs during WebAuthn Related Origin Requests, where the operating system’s background credential service fetches domain validation files directly outside Safari’s WebKit proxy environment. While the network exposure does not compromise passkey cryptographic validity or private keys, the unproxied traffic allows external websites to trace user IP addresses during passkey validation requests.

El Salvador Seeks Digital Identity Cooperation With South Korea

El Salvador’s newly appointed ambassador to South Korea, Federico Miguel Guerrero Avendano, has initiated diplomatic efforts to establish bilateral government agreements covering digital identity infrastructure, AI governance, and cybersecurity. Seeking South Korean public-sector expertise and technical investment, El Salvador aims to collaborate on smart public services, fintech regulation, and regional digital public infrastructure projects. The diplomatic outreach seeks to form formal government-to-government frameworks to build cross-border digital identity agreements and smart public service infrastructure.

Philippine Central Bank Proposes Mandatory National ID Authentication for Financial Institutions

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has issued a draft memorandum proposing mandatory integration of the Philippine National ID Authentication Services (NIDAS) for all supervised financial institutions conducting digital customer onboarding. The proposed regulation sets a phased compliance timeline—giving major retail banks three months and smaller institutions six months—to validate customer identity using government facial recognition, fingerprints, and registry records. Moving institutions away from static card image uploads, the central bank aims to mandate national identity authentication for bank customer onboarding.
