BIO-key and Maktabi Tech Bring Passwordless IAM to Saudi Education

BIO-key International has partnered with Maktabi Tech to offer biometric and passwordless identity and access management to schools, universities and other educational institutions in Saudi Arabia.

The agreement brings BIO-key’s PortalGuard platform into Maktabi Tech’s education-sector portfolio. PortalGuard combines single sign-on, adaptive multi-factor authentication, passwordless access and identity-bound biometrics, with deployment options for on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments.

Maktabi Tech will provide regional customer relationships and cybersecurity specialists to support planning, solution design, implementation and ongoing advisory work. The company focuses on digital transformation and cybersecurity for education customers in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, while the initial market emphasis for the partnership is Saudi Arabia.

Education environments can present unusually complex identity requirements because students, instructors, researchers, contractors and administrators need different levels of access to learning systems, cloud applications, student records and institutional services. The partners are positioning centralized authentication as a way to apply consistent access policies across those user groups.

BIO-key has previously expanded PortalGuard through channel agreements, including a distribution partnership with Darksteel Technologies. The Maktabi relationship follows the same channel model but adds a specialist with established education-sector operations in the Middle East.

The move also coincides with Saudi investment in national digital identity infrastructure and broader cybersecurity programs under Vision 2030. Schools and universities are part of that transformation as more teaching, administration and research systems move online.

Maktabi Tech Head of Cyber Security and Modern Workspace Anan Haj Mohammed said senior cybersecurity specialists will work directly with customers during their identity modernization projects. BIO-key International Sales Leader Almuez Mansour said the companies are combining Maktabi’s local education experience with BIO-key’s identity security platform.

PortalGuard is intended to reduce reliance on reusable passwords while keeping access policies under institutional control. Identity-bound biometrics link authentication to the enrolled user rather than a shared device, while adaptive multifactor controls can apply additional checks according to the account, application or assessed risk.

The partnership gives Saudi educational institutions a locally supported route to BIO-key’s IAM technology and gives the U.S.-based vendor another regional distribution channel for its passwordless and biometric products.
