Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

IATA Launches Global Directory to Accelerate Airport Biometric Adoption
IATA has launched the Contactless Travel Directory, a centralized platform to help airlines identify and integrate with airports offering biometric services for check-in, security, and boarding. Built on IATA’s One ID framework, the directory uses a unified API for streamlined data exchange and faster onboarding of biometric capabilities. Demonstrated at Passenger Terminal Expo 2025, the system enables fully contactless journeys and aligns with rising traveler comfort with biometrics. It prioritizes privacy by avoiding PII storage and supports broader use cases across hospitality and mobility sectors, while contributing to IATA’s sustainability goals.
SITA and NEC Partner to Expand Digital Identity Solutions in Air Travel
SITA and NEC Corporation have partnered to expand the global use of digital identity in travel, combining SITA’s widespread air transport IT systems with NEC’s biometric and AI technologies. NEC’s I:Delight platform will integrate into SITA’s privacy-centric Digital Travel Ecosystem, enabling secure, real-time identity verification without direct connections between credential issuers and verifiers. The solution supports mobile, touchless processes across check-in, bag drop, and boarding, and is compatible with existing airport infrastructure. With global passenger volumes set to double by 2040, the partnership aims to reduce wait times and enhance efficiency while maintaining strict data privacy compliance.
MSC Debuts Miami Mega-Terminal with Facial Recognition Boarding System
MSC Cruises has opened a 492,678-square-foot terminal at PortMiami, billed as the world’s largest and most technologically advanced cruise terminal. Designed by Arquitectonica and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure, the facility features a fully integrated biometric journey system with 18 face pods and 22 E-gates, streamlining embarkation for up to 36,000 passengers daily. The terminal supports three ships simultaneously, includes baggage systems, and emphasizes sustainability with LEED Gold certification and shore power capabilities. It will serve both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, with MSC World America launching from the terminal on April 9, 2025.
Armenia Partners with IDEMIA to Launch EU-Standard Biometric ID System by 2026
Armenia is advancing its EU visa liberalization efforts with a phased rollout of biometric identification systems through 2026, aiming to meet Schengen security requirements and enable visa-free travel. A new ePassport contract awarded to IDEMIA and ACI Technology will support production starting in late 2026, while biometric border systems enabling data exchange with international partners will launch by mid-2025. A comprehensive Visa Liberalization Action Plan is expected by June 2025, outlining reform targets. Challenges include the absence of a standardized population registry and concerns over proposed surveillance laws. Successful implementation could ease current visa burdens for Armenian citizens.
Thai Firm Finema Becomes First SE Asian Qualified vLEI Identity Issuer
Finema has become the first Southeast Asian company to earn Qualified vLEI Issuer (QVI) status from the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), enabling it to issue verifiable Legal Entity Identifiers. The vLEI framework supports decentralized, tamper-evident organizational identity verification and is designed to streamline compliance and enhance trust in cross-border trade, particularly for SMEs. Finema’s QVI designation aligns with global ISO standards and reflects GLEIF’s strategy to expand vLEI adoption across Asia. The development bolsters Finema’s decentralized identity platform, facilitating automated KYC/KYB processes and secure digital credentialing.
Ford Patents Vehicle Biometric System to Flag Security Threats
Ford has filed a patent for a multi-modal biometric identification system designed to enhance vehicle security and support law enforcement by capturing and analyzing facial, fingerprint, and behavioral data from individuals near or inside a vehicle. The system would cross-reference data with law enforcement databases to flag potential threats in real time, particularly during traffic stops. While the patent reflects Ford’s ongoing biometric research, the company notes it does not signal immediate product development. Privacy concerns have emerged over data use and surveillance implications, especially in states with biometric data regulations like BIPA and CCPA.
Americans Skeptical of Biometric Security Despite Rising AI Threats, Survey Shows
A new survey reveals widespread skepticism among Americans toward biometric security, with nearly half expressing concern about facial recognition being used for surveillance and 70 percent rejecting biometric implants outright. Despite the push toward passwordless authentication like FIDO2 and passkeys, 61 percent still trust traditional passwords more. Gen Z respondents showed the highest distrust of AI-based security, reflecting heightened privacy awareness. The findings highlight a growing gap between public trust and industry adoption of biometrics, even as AI-driven threats—such as deepfakes and credential theft—intensify. Experts call for greater transparency, regulation, and user control to rebuild confidence.
