Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Cybersecurity Pioneer ‘Darpa Dan’ Joins Badge
Dan Kaufman, known as “Darpa Dan,” has joined biometric authentication startup Badge, lending support to its mission of eliminating stored secrets from authentication. Co-founded by Dr. Tina P. Srivastava and Dr. Charles Herder, Badge uses fuzzy extraction to derive secure keys from biometric input without storing any biometric templates. The system is platform-agnostic, enabling portable, password-free authentication across devices. Badge has partnered with Thales, CyberArk, Microsoft, Cisco, and others to expand its privacy-first identity model. Kaufman’s involvement underscores growing interest in decentralized, regulation-friendly authentication technologies as mobile digital IDs gain traction globally.
AuthID Joins Secure Technology Alliance to Shape Digital Identity Standards
authID has joined the Secure Technology Alliance, signaling its commitment to advancing secure and privacy-first authentication standards. The move follows the launch of PrivacyKey, authID’s biometric login system that avoids storing biometric images or secrets by using zero-knowledge, public-key cryptography. authID will participate in STA working groups focused on mobile authentication, identity, and data protection. The company reports high-speed performance, liveness detection, and compliance with regulations like GDPR and BIPA. Its tools are already deployed in financial services and hiring platforms, with growing recognition from analysts and partners for privacy-focused biometric innovation.
Aware Expands Gaming Industry Reach with SCCG Biometric KYC Partnership
Aware has deepened its partnership with SCCG Management, naming the firm as its global reseller for biometric KYC solutions in the regulated gaming industry. The agreement expands Aware’s reach at a time of increasing regulatory pressure on gaming operators to implement secure identity verification and AML compliance tools. Aware’s suite includes facial recognition, fingerprinting, liveness detection, and document authentication. The partnership aims to deliver rapid, low-friction onboarding while addressing fraud prevention and responsible gaming requirements. The move follows Aware’s appointment of Brian Krause as Chief Revenue Officer and reflects broader biometric adoption trends across high-compliance sectors.
New Biometric Digital Wallet Lets Kids Pay Securely with Fingerprint ID
Power Dynamic Technology has launched PowerKids, a biometric digital wallet for children that allows in-person purchases using facial or fingerprint recognition. Managed through the PowerPay app, parents can set spending limits, monitor transactions, and enable financial literacy tools like games and rewards. Designed for secure, card-free payments, PowerKids emphasizes real-world budgeting and saving habits. While innovative, the platform’s use of children’s biometric data raises privacy questions, with limited details available on GDPR compliance. The rollout follows the company’s prior biometric deployments in Romania and enters a competitive market alongside child-focused digital wallets from Apple and Google.
Alipay Launches Contactless Palm Print Payment System in China
Alipay has introduced the PL1, a palm print payment device that enables users to complete transactions using only their hand—no cards or phones required. The PL1 combines palm surface ridges and vein pattern recognition for dual-layer biometric authentication, offering a claimed false acceptance rate below one in a million. Users link their Alipay wallet by scanning a QR code and registering their palm, with transactions completed in about two seconds. Biometric data is encrypted and stored locally in line with China’s data protection rules. While poised for broader use in transport and healthcare, international expansion may face privacy-related regulatory hurdles.
India Medical Schools to Switch to Face-Based Aadhaar Attendance by 2025
India’s National Medical Commission (NMC) will mandate face-based Aadhaar authentication for faculty and staff attendance at all medical colleges starting May 1, 2025, replacing the current fingerprint-based system. The transition, part of a broader modernization push, requires institutions to submit geofenced GPS coordinates and appoint nodal officers by April 20. Faculty must install the Aadhaar Face Authentication App, which goes live April 24 for a one-week adjustment period. The shift aims to reduce errors and prevent fraud such as “ghost faculty” listings, while raising questions about data privacy and compliance under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection framework.
Gillette Stadium Rolls Out Facial Recognition Entry and Payment System
Gillette Stadium will introduce opt-in facial recognition for entry and payments as part of a major tech upgrade ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Developed with NWN, the system links users’ facial profiles to a digital wallet, streamlining access and transactions. Additional enhancements include AI-powered inventory monitoring, improved Wi-Fi, and new fan navigation systems. Physical renovations—like replacing turf with natural grass and installing the largest outdoor stadium screen in the U.S.—are also underway to meet FIFA standards. The upgrades are part of a broader modernization effort set for phased rollout through 2026.
Rwanda Launches $100M Tender for National Biometric Authentication System
Rwanda has launched a major tender for a Multimodal and Modular Biometrics Authentication System, part of its $200 million World Bank–backed Rwanda Digital Acceleration Project. The system will support identity verification for e-procurement and other government services, capturing face, fingerprint, and iris data. The project aims to enhance the biometric infrastructure behind the Umucyo platform and integrate with the forthcoming Single Digital ID system, extending ID coverage to all citizens, including children. Bidders have until May 7, 2025, to submit proposals, with full-scale digital ID deployment targeted by mid-2027.
