HYPR Adds Redrock’s Palm Biometrics to its Cloud Authentication Platform

HYPR has teamed up with Redrock Biometrics to added palm authentication to its flagship HYPR cloud platform. Redrock is the developer of PalmID, a contactless solution that is able to verify the identities of users based on either palm prints or subdermal palm vein patterns.

According to HYPR, the partnership will allow it to meet the anticipated demand for contactless authentication options when people start to return to work after the COVID-19 pandemic. The company believes that people may be more reticent to use shared touch devices like screens and fingerprint scanners, and that it will be more common to see people wearing masks as a health and safety precaution. That could limit the utility of many facial recognition systems.

PalmID offers a potential solution to that problem, delivering passwordless (and contactless) authentication that is not based on facial biometrics. The HYPR cloud platform is an enterprise-level solution that was designed to eliminate the need for passwords.

“The world is changing in front of us, and palm biometrics are at the forefront of best available methods in the area of biometric security,” said Redrock Co-Founder Lenny Kontsevich.

HYPR is not the first company to note that COVID-19 has generated more interest in contactless authentication options. Biometric specialists like Invixium and iiDENTIFii have made similar observations, while Fingerprint Cards has argued that biometrics can help raise the payment caps for contactless transactions. Redrock also sees the trend, and has offered to waive its typical licensing fee for essential service providers during the pandemic.

The news comes only days after HYPR announced the hire of a new VP of Engineering.
