HID Global Acquires IDmelon in Strategic Push to Dominate FIDO-Based Passwordless Authentication

HID Global has announced a definitive agreement to acquire IDmelon, a Vancouver-based provider of FIDO authentication solutions, in a strategic move that signals an aggressive push to bridge the gap between legacy physical access systems and the passwordless future. The acquisition will allow HID to integrate IDmelon’s technology, which enables existing employee ID cards and mobile devices to function as FIDO2 security keys, directly into its vast portfolio of identity and access management (IAM) solutions.

The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2025. It directly addresses one of the biggest hurdles to enterprise adoption of phishing-resistant passwordless authentication: the cost and complexity of deploying new hardware. While many organizations rely on dedicated USB or NFC security keys, IDmelon’s software platform allows the millions of HID access cards already in circulation to be converted into “converged credentials” for both physical and logical access.

Building on Recent FIDO Momentum

“Users have become acutely aware of the problems with passwords,” said Björn Lidefelt, EVP and Head of HID. “By adding IDmelon to the HID family, we now provide an easier path to passwordless.”

This acquisition is a logical next step in HID’s evolving FIDO strategy. The company has been steadily expanding its capabilities in this area, including the recent launch of FIDO-certified hardware authenticators and an Enterprise Passkey Management platform. By acquiring IDmelon, HID is not just adding a new product but is creating a seamless upgrade path for its massive installed base of enterprise customers, effectively turning a potentially costly “rip and replace” project into a more manageable software-based enablement.

Martin Ladstaetter, HID’s SVP and Head of IAMS, emphasized this point, stating the company is now “better equipped to help customers maximize their existing hardware investments by converting existing access cards into converged credentials—secure, multi-use keys that unify physical and logical access across the enterprise.”

The Convergence of Physical and Digital Security

The move represents a pivotal moment in the long-discussed convergence of physical and digital security. It positions HID to offer a unified identity model where a single credential – whether a physical card or a mobile device – can securely manage access to everything from a building’s front door to a user’s cloud applications.

This approach aligns with broader industry momentum around passwordless authentication, as enterprises seek to eliminate password-related security vulnerabilities while improving user experience. IDmelon will be integrated into HID’s Identity and Access Management Solutions (IAMS) Business Area, complementing the company’s extensive physical access control portfolio.
