HID Global, in collaboration with Smart Spaces and Cohesion, has announced the integration of mobile credentials into Google Wallet. The innovation allows employees, tenants, and guests to use their Android phones as digital keys for various access points like doors, elevators, and even printers.
Leveraging compatibility with Signo and iCLASS SE readers, the solution is designed to offer a seamless and secure user experience. The service, which streamlines badge distribution and management through features like remote enrollment and credential removal, will initially be available in several countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and several European nations.
In announcing the solution, HID noted that the mobile credentials “take full advantage of the privacy and security features built into Android phones.” Besides secure boot mechanisms and sophisticated encryption, Android security features also typically include support for biometric user authentication, either through a fingerprint or face scan, adding a further layer of security to the mobile-based access solution.
“We are thrilled to partner with Smart Spaces and Cohesion to provide their customers and users with a convenient, secure wallet experience on Android phones,” said HID’s VP of Mobile, Sanjit Bardhan. “By adding mobile credentials in Google Wallet, users can access everything from turnstiles and elevators to certain floors on a building to computer and printer networks.”
News of the collaboration arrives alongside HID’s announcement of its new OMNIKEY SE Reader Core module this week—an access reader solution that is also focused on extending support for mobile-based credentials. Biometric authentication and mobile credentials are also a key theme in HID’s recently published “2024 State of the Security Industry Report”, which lays out some noteworthy data about the growing prominence of both technology categories.
