The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation has appointed eMudhra as a Validation Agent, allowing the Indian digital-trust company to add Legal Entity Identifier services to its customer onboarding processes.
Under the arrangement, eMudhra will verify applicant information and submit LEI applications and renewals through Legal Entity Identifier India Limited. LEIL, a subsidiary of the Clearing Corporation of India, is accredited by GLEIF to issue and maintain the identifiers.
An LEI is a standardized 20-character code used to identify a legal entity participating in financial transactions. The record links an organization to reference data such as its official name and ownership relationships, helping financial institutions and regulators determine which entity is involved in a transaction.
Validation Agents act as an enrollment channel rather than issuing LEIs themselves. eMudhra can incorporate the data checks into its existing identity-verification and onboarding services, while LEIL remains responsible for creating and maintaining each official record in the global LEI system.
LEIL is the only LEI issuer recognized by the Reserve Bank of India under the country’s Payment and Settlement Systems Act. The central bank consolidated its LEI requirements in March for specified securities, money-market, foreign-exchange and derivatives transactions.
India became the jurisdiction with the largest number of active LEIs in January and recorded the highest growth rate during the second quarter, according to GLEIF. The foundation now works with more than 20 Validation Agents globally.
eMudhra is also a licensed certifying authority and public certificate authority, connecting the new role with its work in organizational credentials and digital signatures. Indian vendors have continued to develop locally produced certificate infrastructure, including FIPS-validated tokens for digital signature certificates.
The Validation Agent model places LEI enrollment inside a service provider’s existing customer relationship. A comparable integration principle is used when compliance platforms embed KYC and anti-money-laundering checks into professional workflows, reducing the need for a customer to complete a separate process with another provider.
GLEIF said the appointment will extend LEI access through eMudhra’s digital-trust operations in more than 35 countries. Applications verified by eMudhra will be passed to LEIL for issuance and ongoing record maintenance.
