Fingerprint Cards and Feitian have officially unveiled the result of their collaboration on biometric payment card technology – a solution that is ready for deployment on a mass commercial scale.
The payment card features an embedded fingerprint sensor and is designed to perform biometric authentication during a given transaction. To that end, it leverages Fingerprints’ FPC-BEP biometric software, operating through the company’s T2 fingerprint sensor module designed for flexible card integrations.
Feitian, for its part, has contributed its FEITIAN Java Card Operating System to help enable biometrically secured transactions without the need for a microcontroller. And Infineon technology is also playing an important role in the solution, through its SLC38 Secure Element solution.
The solution’s unveiling comes after FPC and Feitian announced their plans for a biometric card collaboration last month. As such, it’s a partial fulfilment of their promise to deliver both payment and access control cards through their joint efforts.
“We are pleased to collaborate with both Feitian and Infineon, and this three-party collaboration shows that great expertise and knowledge will bring new innovative products to the market without sacrificing security or performance,” commented FPC’s Michel Roig. “Being able to offer a product with proven and world-leading biometrics and high security with low cost goes in line with meeting our customers’ demand.”
Roig heads Fingerprint Cards Switzerland, FPC’s payments and access-focused subsidiary that was established through a corporate restructuring that took effect at the start of this year. The company’s other subsidiary, Fingerprint Technology Company, focuses on mobile and PC integrations of its biometric technology.
FPC’s joint solution with Feitian and Infineon should help the company to further solidify its position in the emerging biometric cards market as a growing number of financial organizations around the world prepare for large-scale commercial launches of the technology. The solution will be offered to card makers as a pre-laminated payment card, helping to keep costs down and to make it easier to manufacture it at scale using standard processes.
“This groundbreaking card solution will enable increased scalability both from an integration and production perspective as well as improved cost for manufacturing,” asserted Feitian VP Yan Yan.
