The DVV has assumed three key responsibilities in the pilot: serving as a wallet provider, managing Person Identification Data (PID), and functioning as a PhotoID provider. These roles position the agency as a crucial participant in developing the infrastructure for digital identity verification in Finland.
In a notable development, the DVV is collaborating with Amadeus, a travel technology company that has recently expanded its digital identity capabilities through various partnerships and acquisitions, including a €320 million acquisition of Vision-Box. The partnership is testing a travel use case that enables online check-in using the EUDI Wallet.
The pilot demonstrates the wallet’s selective disclosure capabilities, allowing users to share specific identification attributes with Amadeus’s test service during the check-in process. This feature reflects the EU’s privacy-by-design principles and the broader goals of the EUDI Wallet initiative.
The project is part of a larger EU-funded program, with the European Commission investing €46 million through the Digital Europe Programme. The EWC, comprising approximately 60 organizations, is working toward full implementation of the EUDI Wallet across member states by 2026.
Recent developments in the EUDI Wallet ecosystem include the release of new payment integration specifications and the exploration of additional functionalities through various pilot programs. These initiatives aim to create a comprehensive digital identity solution that can support multiple use cases, from travel and authentication to payments and document signing.
The DVV-Amadeus pilot represents a significant step toward implementing practical applications of the EUDI Wallet, particularly in the travel sector, where it could streamline check-in processes and enhance data security while maintaining user privacy.
The project faces several implementation challenges, including technical integration complexity, the need for standardization across member states, and ensuring widespread user adoption. The success of these pilots will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of the EU’s digital identity framework and its potential to serve as a model for similar initiatives globally.
