FacePhi is teaming up with the University of Alicante to make the tech industry more inclusive. To that end, FacePhi has signed on to participate in the University’s “I want to be an Engineer” program, which is being set up to encourage more students to consider careers in the science and technology sector.
The “I want to be an Engineer” program is being pushed by the University’s Higher Polytechnic School, and is being put together to try to generate more interest in engineering and related fields. Both FacePhi and the school also want to find a way to make those opportunities more appealing to a wider array of students. The Spanish Ministry of Education has reported that women make up more than half (54 percent) of the country’s university population, but are still only a fraction of the student body (25 percent) in technical and engineering programs.
That number drops even further at the professional level, where women account for a mere 15 percent of the workforce in FacePhi’s particular area of expertise. The company and the school are hoping that the new engineering program will reverse that trend, and convince more female students to pursue more technical lines of study.
To achieve that goal, FacePhi will work with the school to put together an intensive ‘campus’ in the month of June. That campus will welcome hundreds of high school students, and give them the chance to learn more about different branches of engineering, ranging from computer science and telecommunications to robotics and medical technology. FacePhi has also sent representatives to speak directly to students at Secondary Education Institutes in Spain. The company believes that more girls will aspire to careers in tech if they have more female role models to look up to in those fields.
The program is in keeping with FacePhi’s ongoing efforts to improve conditions in the workplace. The company recently decided to move to a new facility on the Mediterranean coast, and has switched to a four-day work week to provide better work-life balance for its staff. FacePhi has also been recognized for its local charitable contributions.
