FacePhi Named Spain’s SME of the Year

Spain-based biometric authentication specialist FacePhi has won a prestigious award in its home country. Banco Santander and the Chamber of Commerce of Spain gave FacePhi the National SME Award for 2020 in a gala ceremony attended by King Felipe VI.

The award was bestowed in recognition of FacePhi’s ‘Made in Spain’ technology. The company is best known for its facial recognition tech, used most prominently in its SelphID solution to match end users’ selfie photos to the images on their official identity documents. The solution allows for reliable remote customer onboarding through a convenient user experience.

In winning the award, FacePhi evidently impressed a jury including some high-profile names from the financial services sector, among whom were Chamber of Commerce President José Luis Bonet and Santander Spain CEO Rami Aboukhair. What’s more, the award comes just a few weeks after FacePhi won a similar distinction at the municipal level – the Alicante SME of the Year Award.

Commenting on this latest award in a statement, FacePhi CEO Javier Mira said it was a recognition of “an extraordinary team of professionals, who have made new projects possible all over the world despite not having been able to travel for months due to Covid-19,” adding, “Growing and creating new jobs in such a complex scenario has been a challenge, but it has also given us the opportunity for our solutions to have a positive social impact, helping thousands of people to access services safely, contactless and without having to leave their homes.”

The distinction arrives after a corporate update from FacePhi earlier this month indicating that the company dramatically increased its staff over the course of 2020. FacePhi also received €33 million in financing in December, positioning the company for further growth going forward. In announcing its SME of the Year Award win, the company indicated that it will seek to maintain its momentum into 2021 as the biometrics industry continues its ascent.
