DERMALOG Biometric Fever Detection Camera Deployed at Major Shopping Mall

Germany-based biometric technology company DERMALOG has announced that its Fever Detection Camera has been deployed at Scandinavian Park, a large shopping mall and rest stop near the Germany/Denmark border, in an effort to increase safety amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Using thermal imaging, the Fever Detection Camera is contactless and can measure an individual’s body temperature from a distance of up to two meters away. The system has been placed at the entrance to Scandinavian Park’s market , where it is capable of scanning each individual that passes through for signs of an elevated temperature — high fever is one of the symptoms of the COVID-19 virus — and if it is detected, the system can display an alert message to notify officials.

The DERMALOG system also includes an automated mask detection feature which can detect whether or not a person is wearing a mask. In the event that they are not, the system can then display a message notifying them that it is mandatory to wear one, as is the case at Scandinavian Park.

“Currently, a lot of customers are insecure, whether they can shop without hesitation. By using a fever camera, we want to reduce this insecurity to a certain extent and, at the same time, make a significant contribution to health protection at Scandinavian Park,” said Frank Sauerberg, management board member of Scandinavian Park Petersen KG.

Though initially developed for use at border crossings and in airports, according to DERMALOG CEO Günther Mull the thermal camera system “has become an important part of health protection in numerous sectors.”

The move to install the thermal cameras at Scandinavian Park is in line with the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs’ latest Occupational Health and Safety Standards regarding the COVID-19 virus which state, “Notable symptoms of infection with coronavirus include fever, coughing and shortness of breath. For this purpose, provision must be made if possible for non-contact temperature measurement.”
