Signicat says it has signed a contract with Denmark’s Agency for Digital Government to support both the country’s official mobile driving licence application and its forthcoming digital identity wallet. The agreement positions Signicat as a technology provider for Denmark’s Kørekort-appen and as the supplier of NFC-based identity verification for the national digital wallet being developed under the EU digital identity framework.
According to Signicat, the solution will use its ReadID technology to verify identities by reading the secure NFC chip embedded in passports, national identity cards, and residence permits. The company says the process retrieves the official facial image and personal data stored in the document and relies on the cryptographic protections built into the chip. Signicat emphasizes that no new biometric data is created or stored and that the verification process runs entirely on the citizen’s device.
The first version of Denmark’s digital identity wallet is expected in the first half of 2026, with a staged rollout. Denmark’s Agency for Digital Government has similarly described the wallet as an in-development solution aligned with European digital identity initiatives, with early deployment planned before broader expansion.
The Danish approach reinforces the role of NFC document verification as a high-assurance enrollment mechanism for digital wallets. By anchoring identity to government-issued documents with strong cryptographic properties, risk shifts toward protecting the enrollment flow, the user’s device, and associated accounts from takeover or manipulation. How Denmark addresses these challenges in practice will be closely observed as other EU member states advance similar wallet programs.
