Credence ID Secures Strategic Investment From Identis to Accelerate Global Digital ID Expansion

Credence ID has announced a strategic investment and partnership with Identis, positioning the Oakland-based company as the “Digital ID Center of Excellence” within the Identis Group. The announcement frames the transaction as a growth-focused investment intended to accelerate Credence ID’s product roadmap, expand international deployments, and scale adoption of mobile and biometric identity solutions across government and enterprise markets.

The investment is structured primarily as a capital increase and is intended to support expansion of engineering, sales, and business development operations from its California headquarters. The company said the structure allows it to retain its software-first operating model while gaining access to Identis’s global footprint and issuance infrastructure. Identis describes the partnership as a way to unify physical credential issuance, digital wallets, biometric authentication, and real-time verification into a single “physical-to-digital” identity platform.

The announcement follows a period of heightened corporate activity around Credence ID. Earlier this month, Matica Fintec disclosed that it had signed an agreement to acquire an initial 51 percent stake in Credence ID through an $8 million first tranche, with a potential performance-linked increase in ownership. Identis is built on the foundations of Matica Fintec and other identity and payments businesses, including Panini, situating the latest investment within a broader consolidation and integration strategy rather than a standalone transaction.

Operationally, Credence ID has been active across several identity initiatives over the past year. The company has promoted its role as a system integrator in the MOSIP ecosystem, completed ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification, and continued work on mobile driver’s license verification aligned with ISO/IEC 18013-5. It has also positioned its Tap2iD software and device offerings as a way to enable mDL and digital ID verification across existing point-of-service infrastructure.

In its Identis announcement, Credence ID emphasizes support for the full identity lifecycle, including secure issuance, provisioning of physical and digital credentials, mobile credential management, and biometric verification. Identis leadership describes the partnership as aligning with a view of identity as an ecosystem rather than a standalone product, with deployment tailored to local regulatory requirements while remaining interoperable with global standards.

Credence ID said it will continue operating under its existing leadership team, with a stated focus on standards-based interoperability, privacy-preserving design, and cross-jurisdictional trust. The transaction adds another data point to a broader pattern of consolidation in the digital identity sector, as vendors seek to combine software-led mobile identity platforms with large-scale issuance, manufacturing, and distribution capabilities.

The mobile driver’s license sector has seen rapid growth recently, with the ISO/IEC TS 18013-7:2024 standard enabling remote mDL verification and TokenWorks and ONEPROOF deploying North America’s largest commercial mDL verification network across 15,000 devices. However, privacy groups have challenged the ISO 18013-5 standard over surveillance risks, and Login.gov is targeting mDL integration by 2026 for federal digital services.
