Comtel, a European systems integrator with more than 30 years of experience in ICT solutions, has acquired NEC Cruise, significantly expanding its footprint in the cruise industry and strengthening its biometric technology offerings. The deal brings NEC’s long-established expertise in cruise communications and facial recognition systems under the Comtel brand.
Acquisition Details and Company Background
Founded in 1992 as Intelrom, Comtel has grown steadily through acquisitions and diversification, moving from telecommunications to a broad portfolio that includes networking, VoIP, cloud, data centers, and cybersecurity. The company now operates offices in Dubai, the UK, the Netherlands, and Italy, and is guided by a three-year industrial plan under CEO Fabio Lazzerini.
The NEC Cruise acquisition covers the full share capital of NEC Italia S.p.A. and NEC Nederland BV, which are being rebranded as Comtel Innovation Spa and Comtel International BV. Stefano Asperti, previously CEO of NEC Italia, has been appointed CEO of both new entities, while Fabio Lazzerini serves as chairman of Comtel International and Carlo Nardello as chairman of Comtel Innovation. Financial terms included a symbolic €1 purchase price for NEC Nederland, €444,727 for NEC Italia, and additional support payments of around €5.5 million from NEC Europe to ensure business continuity. Projected revenues for the acquired entities are approximately €10 million in the first year post-closing.
NEC Cruise, meanwhile, brings more than 25 years of sector experience, with technology installed on over 80 cruise vessels worldwide. Its biometric capabilities, including NEC’s NeoFace Watch solution, will now be incorporated into Comtel’s integrated communication systems.
Biometrics and Industry Trends
Facial recognition has become increasingly important for cruise operators seeking to streamline passenger flows and strengthen security. With NEC’s biometric technologies now in its portfolio, Comtel is positioned to offer cruise lines integrated platforms that combine communications, access control, and passenger processing. According to Comtel’s announcement, this acquisition “strengthens Comtel’s position in cruise communication solutions and expands into biometric technologies like facial recognition.”
The timing reflects broader trends in cruise operations. Earlier this year, MSC Cruises implemented a comprehensive biometric system at its Miami terminal, while Royal Caribbean used facial recognition in San Juan to reduce disembarkation times by 30 percent. With passenger volumes rebounding, cruise operators are increasingly investing in biometric solutions that improve efficiency and passenger experience.
By combining its communications expertise with NEC’s biometric technologies, Comtel aims to become a key partner for cruise operators modernizing their fleets and terminals. The integration of NeoFace Watch and related solutions will allow cruise lines to automate boarding, enhance onboard security, and provide smoother passenger journeys from port to ship.
