“The system will first revolve around fingerprint scanning, but will ultimately support facial recognition as well, for an even more seamless entry process for baseball fans.”
CLEAR is getting ready to move ahead with biometric ticketing at the ballpark, thanks to a new partnership with Major League Baseball and Tickets.com. The organizations are working together to develop a system that will allow CLEAR members to gain entry to a participating baseball stadium through a simple biometric scan, with no need for a physical or even a digital ticket.
A specific rollout plan is still being developed, but in a statement announcing the collaboration CLEAR said that the biometric ticketing technology “will be piloted at select MLB ballparks later this season,” with a “broader roll-out… beginning in 2019.” The system will first revolve around fingerprint scanning, but will ultimately support facial recognition as well, for an even more seamless entry process for baseball fans.
The plans represent a natural development from CLEAR’s efforts to deliver its expedited screening service to ballparks and other sports stadiums over the last year or so, an expansion from its original arena of passenger processing at airports. While CLEAR’s screening program uses biometrics to verify members’ identities, it hasn’t yet used biometric data to replace tickets.
The company isn’t stopping at biometric ticketing, either, announcing that it’s also working to bring biometric payments to concession stands in the state of Washington. That means fans will virtually be free to leave their wallets at home, with finger and face scans being used to gain entry to the stadium and buy snacks and drinks. And it’s all coming soon, according to CLEAR.
