BIO-key Provides PortalGuard for US Government Services Agency

The U.S. Government Services Agency (GSA) has become BIO-key’s latest PortalGuard customer. The Agency plans to leverage the platform’s two-factor authentication capabilities to secure a new communication application for the public.

To that end, PortalGuard will allow the GSA to keep up with its security requirements. According to the Office of GSA Information Technology (OGIT), any user who logs into its Listserv web interface must be verified with two-factor authentication. With BIO-key, those users will be asked to select one of the platform’s 15 supported technologies for their second factor. The options include biometric modalities like fingerprint and voice recognition, as well as non-biometric alternatives like SMS PINs, tokens, and smart cards.

The GSA opted for PortalGuard because it could be easily integrated with its existing legacy system. The Agency provides centralized procurement for the federal government, while OGIT maintains an email list environment that is available to the public.

“Stringent security compliance requirements are mandatory for all government agencies because of the nature of the information and data that is entrusted to them,” said BIO-key Chairman and CEO Mike DePasquale. “In this case, we enhanced their legacy Listserv application to provide secure, frictionless two-factor authentication with self-service capabilities for all end-users.”

BIO-key has already provided PortalGuard security for the municipal government of Durham, North Carolina. It has also proven to be popular with academic institutions throughout the United States.
