Berkshire Biomedical Extends IP for Biometrics-scanning Medication Dispenser

The digital health specialist Berkshire Biomedical has officially received one new patent and one Notice of Allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office. Both patents concern the company’s Computerized Oral Prescription Administration (COPA) system, which is designed to facilitate the distribution of controlled substances.

The granted patent details the COPA system itself, and specifically the method of dispensing liquid medications that are supposed to be taken orally. The Notice of Allowance, meanwhile, covers a docking station that can be used to refill the COPA system.

“These two new patents significantly enhance our growing intellectual property portfolio, which provides a fortress of protection from would-be competitors,” said Berkshire CEO Rudy Mazzocchi. “This added protection is particularly important as we prepare to submit our 510(k) application for regulatory clearance to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this Fall.”

The COPA system is compatible with mobile devices, and uses fingerprint and dentition recognition to verify someone’s identity before administering the prescribed medication. Doctors, meanwhile, can use the system to remotely set up a treatment schedule, so the patient will always receive the proper dosage at the proper time. COPA will also record each event to create a treatment history for the medical provider.

“The integration of device, data and technology are driving the adoption of virtual care models and we believe that the COPA System can be a leading product in this transformation to virtual care,” concluded Mazzocchi.

COPA is one of several biometric distribution systems that have emerged in the past few months. The city of Vancouver has deployed a vending machine to help combat the opioid epidemic, while Emerald Organic Products is investing in similar technology for the distribution of marijuana. CyberLink has also provided FaceME facial recognition technology for a new iMedtac drug dispensing cabinet.
