Aware Targets Public Agencies With Multimodal Biometric Platform

Aware is moving forward with the official launch of its AwareABIS platform. As the name would suggest, AwareABIS is an Automated Biometric Identification System that was built to enable large-scale identification and deduplication operations.

According to Aware, the new platform was designed with an eye toward law enforcement and other civic organizations. AwareABIS can handle as many as 30 million identities, and features modular architecture that allows customers to build an identity infrastructure that is tailored to their own specific needs. As a result, the solution is more cost-effective and more flexible than some of the comparable alternatives.

The multimodal AwareABIS platform offers support for face, fingerprint, and iris recognition. When used in law enforcement, it can generate face and fingerprint matches during an investigation, and allows the police to perform fingerprint searches with latent prints. Civic organizations, on the other hand, can use the solution for onboarding and identity verification. Most notably, the solution can be deployed in client applications to make it easier for the public to gain access to healthcare and other government services.

AwareABIS can be integrated into an existing identity and access system, and gives customers full control of any biometric data that they gather using the platform. It also comes with intuitive reporting tools and can accommodate new biometric modalities such as voice recognition without the need for new software.

“For too long [law enforcement and civil agencies] have been locked into monolithic ABIS systems requiring them to replace their existing systems and infrastructure, pass off control of their data to their ABIS provider, and restrict their ability to expand in the future,” said Aware CCO Robert Mungovan. “With AwareABIS, these agencies can now select a biometric identification system that puts them back in control.”

Aware’s fingerprint recognition algorithm recently attained Level 1 and 2 MINEX III compliance from the NIST. Before that, the company bolstered its ABIS portfolio through the November acquisition of Maxar Technologies’ AFIX product suite.
