Indian Government Explores Aadhaar for Domestic Flights

The Indian government is exploring the idea of linking air travel to Aadhaar, the country’s national biometric ID program.

As The Times of India reports, the government has asked Wipro, an India-based IT consultancy, to develop a plan for a project that would allow travelers to book tickets for domestic flights using Aadhaar, and to scan their thumbprints at the airport in order to check in. The aim is help passengers “have as seamless and effortless travel experience at airports as possible,” explained Airports Authority of India head Guruprasad Mohapatra.

The move follows soon after the conclusion of a pilot project that used Aadhaar for biometric passenger screening at the Bengaluru Airport. That system used Safran Identity & Security’s MorphoWave tower, allowing passengers to confirm their identities with the wave of a hand.

The government has asked Wipro to deliver its report for early next month.
