Huawei has officially launched its Mate 8 smartphone, and is keen to highlight the technological sophistication of the device.
The Mate 8 features a Sony 16MP IMX298 camera, allowing for faster, clearer photography; a 6″ IPS-NEO screen; a 4000mAh battery, which Huawei says can provide two days’ worth of power; and a Kirin 950 chipset designed by Huawei. The device also features split-screen functionality, and super-fast charging, with a full day’s power attainable in only half an hour.
In a statement announcing the device, Huawei also emphasized the power of its fingerprint sensor, which it said represents a “new generation of fingerprint technology” that will help to speed up interactions such as making mobile purchases. This could be something of an exaggeration on Huawei’s part; the sensor module in question is an FPC1025, the same model used in last year’s Huawei Honor 5X smartphone. But Huawei insists that the sensor’s design feature a 0.45mm depth, “improving the effective identification area by 10 per cent”.
In any case, the sensor comes from one of the most popular sensor providers serving the smartphone OEM market—Fingerprint Cards—and continues a longstanding relationship that has seen FPC sensors integrated into many Huawei devices, and probably many more to come.
