Fingerprint Cards (FPC) has announced the launch of a new touch fingerprint sensor. The FPC1028 is aimed at the smartphone market—in which FPC is dominant. Specifically the sensor is intended for entry-level handset integrations.
The latest research from Acuity Market Intelligence forecasts that by 2020 all personal mobile devices will be shipping with built-in biometric authentication. FPC actively serving the entry-level segment of the smartphone market with the FPC1028 therefore seems to be a move of industry necessity. In order for biometric authentication to truly proliferate in the mobile space, it must be available on low cost devices. This latest sensor from FPC enables fast, high quality fingerprint authentication at an accessible price point.
The FPC1028 is the company’s most cost-efficient solution for smartphone manufacturers, FPC stated in a press release. The savings stem from design elements: the sensor has a small surface area and its total system solution, a factor that FPC says “has helped to reduce costs for integrating the touch fingerprint sensor in a fingerprint sensor module.”
“Smartphone manufacturers will now be able to offer consumers convenient and secure biometric authentication in all smartphone models in the customers’ product portfolio,” said FPC CEO Jörgen Lantto. “In the same way as FPC’s other OneTouch fingerprint sensors, FPC1028 offers the industry’s best image quality, highest robustness and lowest power consumption, which also allows smartphone manufacturers to offer a great user experience in smartphones for the entry-level segment.”
According to FPC, the first commercial smartphones integrating the FPC1028 are expected to launch near the end of this year and in early 2017.
