Representatives from more than 125 different airlines met to discuss the industry’s agenda for the next decade at last week’s APEX Expo in Los Angeles. The gathered executives identified biometrics and sustainability as two of the most important priorities facing the airline industry.
To that end, Star Alliance CEO Jeffrey Goh delivered a keynote on the use of biometric tokens, while JetBlue President and COO Joanna Geraghty explained how biometrics can reduce the stress often associated with travel. Star Alliance recently announced that it was developing a facial recognition platform for frequent fliers in conjunction with NEC, while JetBlue has teamed up with SITA and trialed biometric boarding at JFK airport in New York.
“APEX takes its role in accelerating the airline industry and advancing passenger experience as our central mission driving the end-to-end future travel experience,” said APEX CEO Joe Leader.
Organized by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), the 40th annual APEX Expo ran from September 9th to 12th and coincided with the International Flight Services Association (IFSA) Expo and the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) for the Americas. The 2020 APEX Awards were handed out during the event, delivering top prizes to Fiji Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines, VT Miltope, and American Airlines. Delta, Emirates, and Qatar Airways were also recognized during the Passenger Choice Awards.

A key area of application for biometric technology is at the border. Anyone who’s traveled by air can tell you security checkpoints border crossings are some of the most frustrating places to have to move through. Thankfully, biometric technology is helping automate the process. Trusted passenger screening initiatives and automated eGates and kiosks are helping make the international travel experience easier on passengers while upping the efficiency for government agencies and keeping borders safer than ever before.
