Vancouver International Airport is partnering with Amadeus to complete its digital transformation. The Airport will specifically be migrating all of its operations to the cloud through the Amadeus Flow solution, in a move that will give the airport more flexibility when it comes to the provision of other services.
In that regard, administrators noted that the cloud-based Amadeus Flow allows its airline partners to move away from fixed check-in desks and service locations. Agents will instead be able to use mobile devices to go about their jobs, which means that passengers will not need to cluster at designated chokepoints to complete their travel journey. The move is expected to support better social distancing, and reduce the size of service lines.
Amadeus Flow will also enable more biometric service options. Passengers will eventually be able to check in and pass through airport checkpoints with only a facial recognition scan, and without needing to present a physical boarding pass or a passport. The tech is part of a contactless passenger experience.
“The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated our desire for digital transformation,” said Vancouver Airport Authority CIO and Innovation VP Lynette DuJohn. “Amadeus is helping us make that transition by connecting us with airlines more effectively, so we’re ready to harness new innovations for the benefit of passengers.”
The full Amadeus Flow network will provide coverage for more than 650 check-in and gate desks at Vancouver International, which has upwards of 30 different airline partners. The platform can even extend the Authority’s reach beyond the airport itself, to bring similar identity and baggage services to hotels, cruise terminals, and other off-site locations.
Authorities noted that the Amadeus system should shrink the airport’s carbon footprint, since the mobile workstations use less energy and break down far less frequently than the more traditional workstations that are currently in use. Vancouver International’s move to the cloud is in keeping with the broader trend toward digital transformation in the travel industry.
