Alcatraz Provides Facial Recognition for Boon Edam Access Control Products

Boon Edam is integrating Alcatraz’s facial recognition technology into its various access control products, and its mantrap portal circle lock units in particular. Based in the Netherlands, Boon Edam is best known as a developer of security entrances like turnstiles and revolving doors.

Alcatraz, meanwhile, is the developer of the Rock, a contactless facial authentication platform with 3D sensing capabilities. The solution verifies the identities of people trying to gain access to a secure location, and will also stop tailgaters who try to sneak in behind people with legitimate credentials. The Rock was designed to be compatible with existing access control solutions, and can replace or supplement traditional security solutions like physical ID badges.

“We knew that facial authentication would enhance Boon Edam’s entrance control solutions by giving them the option to incorporate secure, frictionless access control regardless of the access control provider they use because we developed the Rock to work with all of them,” said Alcatraz Founder and CEO Vince Gaydarzhiev.

“Some biometrics take more time because a person’s face has to be directly in front of an iris scanner, for example,” added Boon Edam Technology and Product Support VP Kurt Measom.

“With the Rock, it’s quick and intuitive. It recognizes users very quickly and takes no time at all.” 

Alcatraz AI was originally planning to showcase the Rock at ISC West, at least until the event was postponed due to public health concerns related to COVID-19. The facial recognition specialist received $6 million in funding in March of 2019, and is currently hoping to reach new customers through a new partnership with Intelligent Systems Marketing.

Boon Edam previously demoed its biometric Lifeline Speed Swing turnstile at ISC East in November, although that particular solution utilizes touchless optical fingerprint sensors instead of facial recognition.
