AirAsia has partnered with Vision-Box to advance its digital transformation. To that end, AirAsia will be combining Vision-Box’s Orchestra Identity Management Platform with its own contactless face-based biometric check-in system.
AirAsia’s FACES (Fast Airport Clearance Experience System) has been around since 2018, and links a biometric template to the person’s travel documents when they check in for their flight. After that, that person no longer needs to show their documents at airport checkpoints, and can instead move through the terminal with only a facial recognition scan.
The Orchestra platform will make that biometric identification system easier to manage with end-to-end data management and administration tools. The system is certified for Privacy by Design, and will provide AirAsia real-time monitoring, analytics, and reports about security events at AirAsia hubs.
AirAsia is hoping that its renewed emphasis on contactless screening technology will help restore the public’s trust in air travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline plans to install touchless infrastructure at all 24 of its travel hubs, where it will be used to facilitate mobile digital ID enrollment and enable automated baggage drop for passengers. It will also be used to support other public safety features like temperature checks.
“We are taking the opportunity from this crisis to further improve our digital capabilities,” said AirAsia Group COO Javed Malik. “These new technologies make flying safe, affordable, and convenient. We are pleased to partner with Vision-Box to deliver a major step change in touchless and contactless air travel technologies.”
“This partnership will lead to a traveller management model that will drive how passenger identification and clearance is conducted in the future with reduced operating costs, increased efficiency and improved output,” added Vision-Box CEO Miguel Leitmann.
Vision-Box recently provided biometric screening technology for Winnipeg International Airport in Manitoba, Canada. London’s Gatwick Airport is also using Orchestra to replace its existing passenger management system.
