Air Bank Uses Innovatrics Face Biometrics for PSD2 App Pairing

Air Bank is using Innovatrics face biometrics to support secure mobile app pairing for existing customers in Czechia, bringing biometric verification into a recurring mobile banking workflow rather than limiting it to new-account onboarding.

The deployment supports the My Air app, which Innovatrics says is used by around 90 percent of Air Bank clients. The bank needed a verification process that could satisfy PSD2 strong customer authentication requirements while fitting into a familiar smartphone-based journey for customers who already use the app for daily banking.

Innovatrics says Air Bank selected the technology based on references from its financial group, NIST evaluation results, and the balance between security and usability. In a banking setting, the identity check must be strong enough for regulated digital actions but simple enough for customers to complete without leaving the mobile journey.

When an existing client links the My Air app, the customer enters a phone number and date of birth, receives a one-time SMS code, and takes a selfie. Innovatrics identity verification checks liveness and compares the selfie with a reference portrait already stored in the bank’s database, combining possession of the phone channel with biometric verification.

Air Bank is applying biometrics to app pairing, a sensitive account-access event that sits between onboarding and everyday transaction approval. In the Czech market, Innovatrics says remote account opening is limited by local rules, making app pairing one of the bank’s main remote identity verification use cases.

Air Bank also uses Innovatrics technology in a supported remote onboarding flow for customers who already hold an account at another Czech bank. That process scans two identity documents, extracts data from them, and captures the face image from the IDs so the bank can connect document evidence with biometric verification.

The bank began with Innovatrics SDK-based, on-premises identity verification in 2022. In 2026, it moved to a server-side service with additional identity verification features, including improved image capture, stronger OCR, smile liveness, and video injection detection. The upgrade gives the bank a broader set of controls for image quality, document processing, and presentation-attack protection as biometric verification becomes part of routine mobile banking operations. It also shifts more of the verification capability into a service model that can support future feature additions.

“Face biometrics gave us a practical way to make app pairing easier for clients while keeping the identity check strong,” said Jakub Feldstein, Identity Services Manager at Air Bank.

For Innovatrics, the Air Bank deployment adds a financial-services example to a broader run of recent company activity. The company recently achieved MOSIP compliance for foundational national ID programs and topped NIST’s FATE age-estimation composite across 23 vendors, while also expanding its operational footprint by opening Biometrics House in Bratislava.
