Government officials are making special efforts to get children enrolled in India’s Aadhaar program. In some areas, authorities are going so far as to set up ‘enrollment camps’ for kids aged six and under.
Several such camps were organized this weekend in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, with officials setting up shop in numerous villages so that children could be enrolled between the hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. The camps were established at various local schools, and parents were encouraged to bring their kids’ birth certificates and their own Aadhaar cards.
The measures signal a pronounced effort on the part of Indian officials to enroll as many citizens as possible in Aadhaar, the country’s national biometric ID program. A significant milestone was recently reached as Aadhaar enrolment surpassed one billion citizens, and with the program increasingly used to administrate government services and even being linked to banking, the continued push to get people signed up is understandable—especially when it comes to this new generation of citizens who will grow up with Aadhaar being a constant, important component of civil engagement.
