CLEAR has launched CLEAR ID, a free digital identity offering positioned for use at U.S. Transportation Security Administration checkpoints nationwide. According to the company, CLEAR ID allows travelers to create a digital ID by uploading a U.S. passport within the CLEAR mobile app, enabling identity verification at TSA without presenting a physical document at the checkpoint.
CLEAR explains that users can create CLEAR ID by opening the app, navigating to the Vault feature, and adding their passport. The company emphasizes that while CLEAR ID can be used at TSA checkpoints, travelers should still carry a REAL ID-compliant physical document when flying. CLEAR ID is explicitly positioned as separate from CLEAR+, the company’s paid membership product that provides access to dedicated airport lanes and biometric verification at CLEAR pods.
The launch highlights a notable strategic move in the digital identity landscape. Rather than relying on state-issued mobile driver’s licenses or operating system-level wallets alone, CLEAR is anchoring its credential to the U.S. passport, a widely trusted federal identity document. By making the service free, CLEAR appears to be lowering barriers to adoption while expanding its footprint in everyday identity verification flows.
CLEAR ID raises some familiar questions around fraud prevention and account security. Passport-based onboarding introduces strong document assurance, but attention typically shifts to how digital accounts are protected against takeover, how devices are bound to identities, and how recovery processes are handled if a user loses access to their phone. As adoption grows, the extent to which CLEAR ID interoperates with or competes against government-backed digital wallets will be closely watched.
