CLEAR and TSA Extend Biometric PreCheck Enrolment and Touchless ID at U.S. Airports

CLEAR’s role at U.S. airports has expanded from operating dedicated identity lanes to providing official enrolment services for TSA PreCheck, including at San Francisco International Airport. Under an agreement with the Transportation Security Administration, CLEAR became the third authorised PreCheck enrolment provider, joining existing vendors that handle document checks and background screening for the program.

CLEAR is now operating enrolment pods at selected airports where travellers can sign up for PreCheck or complete renewals. At locations such as SFO, these pods sit alongside CLEAR’s own subscription-based CLEAR Plus lanes, allowing passengers to complete biometrics for CLEAR and handle PreCheck enrolment in the same area. This arrangement reflects a closer relationship between commercial trusted traveller programs and the government’s risk-based screening model.

At the same time, TSA is expanding its use of Credential Authentication Technology units that combine ID document scanning with facial recognition at the checkpoint. At participating airports, travellers can insert an identity document into a kiosk and have a live face image compared to the document photo, removing the need for a printed boarding pass at the travel document checker position. These systems operate alongside CLEAR’s iris and facial recognition processes, together pushing airport checkpoints toward a camera-centric identity verification experience.

The combined effect is a thicker layer of biometric infrastructure around air travel in the United States. Enrolment providers such as CLEAR play a growing role in capturing and managing identity data for government programs, while TSA continues to introduce its own hardware and matching systems at the checkpoint. As more airports adopt these technologies, discussions about interoperability, data protection, and options for travellers who prefer traditional document checks are likely to remain active.
