“We have selected Zwipe because of their proven ability to integrate biometrics with payment functionalities into an extremely space and energy-constrained environment.” – Gabrielle Bugat, Group Senior Vice President, Head of Business Unit, Financial Services, G+D Mobile Security
Zwipe and Giesecke + Devrient Mobile Security (or “G+D”) are teaming up on a new payment device, the companies have announced.
At the partnership’s outset, details about the companies’ collaboration are scant, with Zwipe and G+D stating only that they aim “to develop a biometric payment device” that will ultimately be piloted by leading banks. Broadly speaking, the joint effort makes sense, given each company’s areas of expertise: Zwipe is a fingerprint biometrics specialist, while G+D’s security technology has been used in the LG Pay mobile payments platform.
It’s also worth noting that G+D has been increasingly active in the biometric payment cards space, a key focus area for Zwipe. G+D teamed up with fingerprint sensor specialist Fingerprint Cards earlier this summer, after having formed a partnership with IDEMIA focused on payments industry standards in late spring.
Commenting on this latest partnership, G+D’s financial services VP, Gabrielle Bugat, commended Zwipe’s technological expertise. “We have selected Zwipe because of their proven ability to integrate biometrics with payment functionalities into an extremely space and energy-constrained environment,” she said, adding, “we are confident that this joint effort will help establish new opportunities in the emerging biometric payments marketplace.”
The companies say that they will announce pilot programs of their joint solution as soon as they are ready to commence, though work on the product is just getting underway.
