Zimbabwe is set to become the first country in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to implement an advanced biometric border control system. The new system will use fingerprint and iris biometrics to automate and streamline various border control processes, enhancing security and efficiency.
“This border management system will enhance the coordination and efficiency of all border agencies, facilitating a more secure and seamless process for travelers,” said Zimbabwe’s Chief Director of Immigration, Respect Gono.
The system will be piloted at key entry points, including major airports and border posts, and will involve the use of e-gates equipped with biometric verification technology. Travelers will be able to use these gates for self-service immigration clearance, with their identities verified against the national immigration database.
The implementation of the new system is expected to improve coordination among border agencies, reduce processing times, and enhance the overall security of Zimbabwe’s borders. It’s also expected to streamline the travel experience for both citizens and visitors.
The development highlights a growing global trend towards the adoption of advanced biometric technologies for border control and immigration management, aimed at improving security and making border crossings more efficient and convenient for travelers.
