2021 was another strong year for The FIDO Alliance. The organization remains committed to its primary mission, and celebrated many successes as it works to end the world’s reliance on password-based security.
Most notably, the Alliance was finally able to host its first in-person Authenticate conference after its inaugural event was disrupted by COVID-19. The organization used the opportunity to introduce a new Certified Professional Program, which is geared toward engineers, technology architects, and security professionals working in the authentication space. The certification program attests to an individual’s technical expertise, and indicates that they are qualified to help implement FIDO authentication systems.
The Alliance believes that its certification programs will create more consensus about best practices for the cybersecurity industry. On that front, the organization also introduced a new Device Onboard protocol to help enterprises add new IoT devices to a network without exposing themselves to new security threats, and new user experience guidelines for customer-facing businesses that want to transition to passwordless authentication.
In other news, FIDO handed out its first Level 3+ Authenticator certification to Germany’s Office of Information Security, which speaks to the growing acceptance of the FIDO standard. The Alliance would later start tracking that progress with the release of its first Online Authentication Barometer, and run its first Global Developer Challenge to push international teams to come up with new applications of FIDO2 technology.
Taken together, the Alliance’s accomplishments suggest that passwordless solutions are gaining ground in the public and private sectors. Let us know your thoughts on the state of passwordless authentication in our 2021 Year in Review Survey!
