Players in the biometrics industry are remarkably open to working with each other, suggest results from FindBiometrics’ latest Year in Review survey.
Question 18 of the survey asked how much respondents agreed with the statement, “Industry cooperation through partnerships and alliances is crucial in meeting the market demands of biometrics.” The answers showed an overwhelming consensus: 96 percent agreed, with well over half – 58 percent – saying they “Strongly agree”. Only one percent said they “Strongly disagree”.
To some extent, the answers may reflect a tradition of this kind of collaboration in the biometrics industry. As more biometrics specialists took aim at the consumer market in the wake of the mobile biometrics revolution, for example, many joined the FIDO Alliance to work together on developing industry-wide standards that could help to ensure interconnectivity and compatibility among solutions. And on the non-commercial side of things, the kinds of large-scale government projects that often come up in the biometrics industry often require major players to work together on join solutions.
It’s also worth noting that one of the biggest trends taking shape in the biometrics market today – fingerprint-scanning payment cards – has so far involved major projects requiring different biometrics players to collaborate in projects with financial services providers, so for many the importance of partnerships and cooperation is top of mind on a constant basis.
And the fact that so many share this perspective now suggests that it’s one that will prevail in the industry into the coming year and well beyond.
