Year in Review 2020: Do You Want a Wellness Check?

Every year, the FindBiometrics Year in Review survey tackles some of the most important issues and topics facing the biometrics industry, ultimately offering us a look at the evolution of important trends over the years. But this year, the survey will feature something new – and hopefully unique to 2020: the agree/disagree question, “I am more likely to enter a public building if a wellness screening solution – such as fever detection, wellness declaration, or immunity passport – is required for access.”

This is, of course, about the impact of COVID-19. A number of vendors of biometric access control systems have now added temperature screening to their offerings as a means of helping to detect fever – a sign of potential COVID-19 infection. Coupled with a facial recognition scan, for example, such a system can not only deny access to individuals who might inadvertently spread the virus, but it can also immediately notify administrators about employees who can’t be admitted to work.

Then there are the emerging wellness check and immunity passport solutions. Toronto-based biometric access solution provider BioConnect launched a mobile app solution that prompts employees to fill out a brief questionnaire before entering a work facility to verify that they are not, to the best of their knowledge, infected with the virus; Yoti, meanwhile, integrated its own identity app solution with a rapid COVID-19 testing platform to facilitate venue access. And CLEAR’s immunity passport solution will be used to help the LA Football Club reopen safely in the new year.
