Worldcoin Launches Eye-Scanning ID Verification Across UK Cities

Worldcoin, the digital identity initiative developed by Tools for Humanity and co-founded by Sam Altman, has launched its biometric eye-scanning “Orb” devices in the United Kingdom. The deployment begins in London, with plans to expand to other major cities including Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Belfast, and Glasgow.

World ID and the Role of the Orb

The Orb devices capture an individual’s iris and facial biometrics to generate a unique digital identity credential known as a World ID. This credential allows users to verify that they are human online without revealing personal data, offering an alternative to traditional identification systems. The initiative is positioned as a solution to challenges posed by AI-generated content, deepfakes, and identity fraud.

Once verified, individuals can use their World ID to authenticate themselves on various digital platforms, including popular gaming services, Minecraft, Reddit, and Discord. In return for completing an iris scan, users are rewarded with Worldcoin’s native cryptocurrency token, WLD. The system is designed to minimize personal data exposure while offering a consistent form of human authentication across the internet.

UK Rollout and Regulatory Landscape

According to Tools for Humanity, Orbs will be installed at physical locations such as shopping malls and high streets. Plans also include partnerships with retailers to offer self-service Orb kiosks, designed to function much like ATMs. These approaches aim to increase accessibility and encourage broader adoption of the technology.

Worldcoin’s rapid global rollout continues amid regulatory scrutiny. Multiple jurisdictions have raised privacy concerns over the collection and handling of biometric data. Privacy advocates have questioned the long-term implications of biometric registration, even as the company asserts that all biometric data remains on users’ devices and is not stored on centralized servers.

The UK launch follows a series of recent moves by Worldcoin to expand its global footprint. The company has introduced the World ID system in Taiwan through strategic partnerships and is investing in its technical capabilities. A notable step in this direction was its acquisition of Modulus Labs, aimed at strengthening research in zero-knowledge AI and cryptography.
