World, a provider of biometric identity verification technology that uses iris scanning and facial recognition to authenticate human users, has announced the launch of its ID verification services in Brazil, bringing its latest version, World ID 3.0, to South America’s largest country. The platform’s core technology combines physical biometric verification with digital identity credentials to help organizations distinguish between human users and AI bots. This development follows the company’s initial preview through pop-up events in Brazil during 2023. Starting November 13, residents of São Paulo will be able to access World’s ID verification services across multiple locations, with plans to expand into additional cities.
The World ID platform enables users to anonymously confirm their human identity online through biometric verification. The system addresses growing concerns about distinguishing real users from artificial intelligence (AI) bots, which according to cybersecurity firm Imperva now account for nearly one-third of all internet traffic.
A survey conducted by IPSOS and Tools for Humanity involving 1,200 Brazilian respondents found that 70 percent expressed concerns about distinguishing between human and AI-generated content. The study also revealed that 93 percent of respondents had either experienced identity theft personally or knew someone who had, highlighting significant privacy and security challenges in the region.
The expanded deployment introduces enhanced security features, including Deep Face technology powered by Face Auth, which World unveiled at its “A New World” event in October. This technology aims to strengthen protection against deepfakes, which have become increasingly sophisticated and prevalent.
Brazil represents a strategic market for World’s expansion, as the country accounts for over 40 percent of Latin America’s GDP and ranks among the world’s ten largest economies. The launch aligns with World’s broader mission following its recent rebranding from Worldcoin, led by co-founders Sam Altman and Alex Blania, to focus on providing digital identity solutions that support human verification amid increasing AI adoption.
